Forestry Technician

For the GS-05 level:
Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-04 grade level; OR a bachelor's degree or 4 years of successfully completed education above high school (120 semester/180 quarter hours) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources, outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science (no more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable);OR combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. Examples of specialized experience are:
Assists senior technicians in applying silvicultural prescriptions and marking guides to designate harvest timber; marks timber using well defined marking rules, established marking guides, and specific instructions; on a prescribed fire crew and with the guidance of senior technicians, performs prescribed fire operations including preparation, ignition, monitoring, holding and mop up; assists in the implementation of recreation operation and maintenance for developed and dispersed recreation sites; and/or collects and analyzes data on the characteristics and quality of samples from field tests. For the GS-06 level:
Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-05). Examples of specialized experience are:
Independently applies silvicultural prescriptions and marking guides to designate harvest timber; performs preparatory work for timber sales; during initial attack fire suppression activities, locates fireline, directs and participates in fireline construction, backfiring and burnout operations, engine and pump operations, tree falling and holding/patrol/mop-up operations; assists with the enforcement of off-road vehicle restrictions; and/or developed reports on the characteristics and quality of samples from field tests. For the GS-07 level:
Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-06). Examples of specialized experience are:
Assisted with laying out sales in accordance with operational standards, guidelines and other instructions and points out variables such as accessibility, steep slopes, stream protection, nesting tree protection, wildlife and heritage impacts, fuels management and regeneration requirements; Conducted assigned portions of surveys and studies of recreation trail areas, facilities and activities on a unit; Monitored and maintained existing trails, facilities, etc. to ensure they are in operable condition; Assisted with performing a variety of field studies of sensitive wildlife species to determine numbers, environmental conditions and the condition of the species and its habitats; Executed fuel treatment plans, slash hazard appraisals and hazard reduction plans. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT:
If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
